Icy Hearts
I just found this poem in an old email I had sent to myself from my workplace. I have no idea when I wrote it, but it encompasses the heart frozen by grief, a common experience among caregivers.
Along the shores of icy dreams
lay frozen starts
and icy hearts
we laughed and played once warmer days
had teased us out of doors,
stayed too long
till sun was gone
and frozen was our start
upon the shores of life’s adored
most tantalizing spot.
Now rooted to the place we’ve grown
stuck fast in soiled stone
And once again thawed out must be
by others love, humanity
Oh, pick your feet up from the start
gather up those frozen hearts
Hold them close to warm with love
and give them stars to climb above.
